The bound and naked body of a procurement officer attached to Guyana Goldfield Inc. was found in his Thomas Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown apartment around 23:35 hrs on Monday night. The body was found with suspected stab wounds to the neck and chest.
The dead man has been identified as 42-year-old Neil Whyte of Suit 1608-141 Adelaide Street, West Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
He stayed at Guyana Goldfield’s apartment complex whenever he was in Guyana.
Police said that a security guard, who is attached to the apartment building, discovered the procurement officer’s lifeless body on a bed.
Whyte’s hands were tied behind his back.
A 25-year-old man, who was seen entering and exiting the apartment by the said security guard, was arrested at his Vryheid Village, West Canje, Berbice, home around 06:30hrs this morning (May 22, 2018).
According to information received, the victim left his apartment building Monday night, telling the security guard that he was going to pick up a friend in Georgetown. The 42-year-old man had returned from a work trip in the hinterland region a few hours prior.
Sometime later, the Guyana Standard has been told, the procurement officer returned to his apartment, accompanied by the 25-year-old suspect.
The suspect spent some time in Whyte’s apartment before leaving around 23:30 hrs. The suspect even alerted the security guard that he was leaving.
This news agency has been told that the gold company has a policy whereby employees occupying the building must check out their guests, and since this was not done by Whyte, the security guard went to his room to check on him.
It was then that the procurement officer was found lying in a pool of blood on his bed—he was already dead.
Whyte’s body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination
