Primary and Nursery-aged students of Baramita, Region One (Barima-Waini) will be occupying two new schools come September.

Regional Education Officer of Region One, Nigel Richards has confirmed that the nursery and primary schools and teacher’s quarters are completed and all measures are in place for the students and teachers to occupy the buildings.

The schools were constructed in a new zone that was developed in Baramita to relocate all public facilities to a more conducive environment thereby, removing the facilities from the distraction and noise that are prevalent in their current location, near the airstrip.

Richards explained that the secondary school department will remain housed in the current structure. Some rehabilitative work will be done to the building to ensure that the students are comfortable. More trained teachers will also be recruited for that department.

These projects are part of the Regional Administration’s 2017 capital programme.

Richards told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that it is part of a holistic programme to transform the Carib community of Baramita. He said that the region is currently sponsoring 11 students who are pursuing their secondary education at the Port Kaituma and North West Secondary Schools.

“The idea is that when the students complete Secondary School, they can get trained and return to the village and teach. This will be great because they know the people and the language. You know there are language barriers, therefore they will teach in both Carib and English.”

Plans are also in place to construct a dormitory and other recreational facilities at the area. (Department of Public Information)
