A plot by two murder suspects to break out of the Lusignan jail was thwarted around 20:30 hrs last night.
It was during security checks that prison officers discovered the iron bar on one of the cells was cut.
The two inmates have since been placed in solitary confinement and additional security has been put in place.
Director of Prisons, Gladwyn Samuels confirmed with the Guyana Standard that an attempt was made by the two inmates to break out of the prison. A hacksaw blade was used to cut one of the iron bars on a cell while attempts were made to cut the second bar.
It is suspected that the inmates started cutting the iron bars on Wednesday night.
Samuels said that the police have been called in to investigate how the inmates got access to the cutting blade.
The Guyana Standard has been told that the two accused were committed to stand trial in the high court for murder.
