25-year-old child rapist, Rowland Sam was this morning handed a life sentence by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Last month at the High Court in Georgetown, Sam, a Block Maker, was found guilty of rape by a 12 member jury.
Sam sexually penetrated a seven-year-old girl between January 1 and 31, 2015, in the county of Demerara.
Sam took advantage of the little girl while she and her other siblings were left in his care.
The guilty verdict was in the proportion 10-2.
Following the presentation of a probation report and victim impact statement, Justice Sewnarine-Beharry imposed the custodial sentence.
Sam, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Clyde Forde, only becomes eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
The State was presented by Prosecutors Lisa Cave and Orinthia Schmidt.
