Teachers are going to return to the classrooms from tomorrow.
Just about an hour ago, the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) called off the nationwide strike by teachers for better pay.
This decision came following an agreement between the union and the Ministry of Education for the teachers’ salary issue to be sent to arbitration.
An agreement for arbitration was met after a meeting that lasted over two hours at the Department of Labour.
Around 17:00hrs, GTU President, Mark Lyte addressed teachers gathered outside the Department of Labour.
He told the teachers that there should be a full resumption of duties by Monday even as he encouraged those who could to return to work tomorrow.
As part of the agreement for resumption of duties, teachers will not see any deductions to their salaries for the absent days during the strike and there will also be no loss of seniority.
The two sides will meet again on Tuesday to finalize the terms of reference for arbitration.
