Investigators from the Guyana Police Force (GPF)’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) were this morning called to interrogate one of their colleagues who allegedly collected $100,000 from the now dead Stonie Henry to settle a rape case.
The 47-year-old deceased is the prisoner who allegedly ingested carbon tablet while being held in the lockups at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost on Tuesday—the same day he was supposed to be charged with the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl.
The deceased’s wife, Shani Alexander in an interview with the Guyana Standard said that she was at home when someone called and informed her that Henry had ingested poison and was at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. He was already dead by the time she got to the medical institution.
While the woman is devastated over her spouse’s demise, she claimed to be even more crushed that the father of two was locked up in the first place. She alleged that her spouse had paid a corporal some $100,000 to settle the matter in July, 2017.
“They say my husband kissed some girl on May 24, 2017 and when he went to the station, they change it to rape…anyways…a corporal who was dealing with the matter tell my husband that she can recommend no charges to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecution) if he pay her $200,000,” the woman alleged.
Alexander further explained that the Corporal informed her husband that she will accept the cash in two installments. “She collected the first $100,000 when she did the report and she said she would have collected the remaining balance after the file came back from the DPP.”
The Guyana Standard was told that from May 2017 to August 2018, Henry, who was a patient at the GPHC’s Psychiatric ward, was required to report to the police station. It was during his last visit that he was arrested and subsequently informed that he was going to be charged with rape.
Since then, Alexander explained that she tried numerous times to make contact with the Corporal to find out what was happening but failed to do so.
After the father of two passed away on Tuesday, Alexander said that she went and made a report about the money that was collected by the Corporal to settle the matter back in 2017 but the policewoman denied the allegations.
The Investigation is ongoing.
