A teenager has admitted to murdering his best friend this morning after the young man confessed to sleeping with his wife.
Detectives revisited the crime scene this afternoon with the suspect, who provided a detailed account of how 21-year-old Mahendra Sooknanan of Number 69 Village, Corentyne, met his demise.
Sooknanan was stabbed multiple times about the body and sustained an injury to the head.
The Guyana Standard understands that the suspect told detectives that he went to the horse racing game with the deceased and afterwards, they went to “take a few drinks” at a shop not far from where the deceased lived.
It was while the two men were walking through a lonely street that the suspect claimed that Sooknanan confessed to him that he had been sleeping with his spouse. They were both intoxicated.
The suspect claimed that he got upset and picked up a piece of wood while the victim pulled out a knife from his pocket in a bid to defend himself.
According to information received, the teen said that he first struck the deceased to the head, causing him to fall to the ground. The knife allegedly fell out of his hand and onto the muddy dam.
“He said that he picked up the knife and juk up Sooknanan and then throw the knife in the trench and run away,” a police source said.
The source said, too, that the suspect claimed he was told that his wife and the deceased were having an affair but he never believed until he confessed to him this morning.
Investigations are ongoing.
