A soldier has confessed to raping and robbing a 20-year-old woman at the Anna Regina, Essequibo community center on Saturday night but his colleague is denying that he was an accomplice to the crime.
The woman and her partner were at the community center around 19:40 hrs when they were confronted by the two Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks, who robbed and physically assaulted the duo.
The lawmen took turns raping the woman as her boyfriend stood about two feet away with a gun pointed to his head. At the time of the attack, the victims had no idea the men were members of the disciplinary force.
The soldiers were subsequently arrested when the couple provided the police with a description of their attackers. The Guyana Standard has been told that one of the soldiers confessed late last night to raping the woman and robbing the couple but his colleague has since denied the entire incident.
“One of them confessed that they went to the center and see the two people and had sex with the woman but the other one denying but his colleague done point him out and say was him so we are working on him to get a confession,” a source said.
Divisional Commander, Khali Pareshram had confirmed that a file would be prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, for legal advice.
According to information received, the young couple told investigators that they went to the community ground to chat but they were suddenly confronted by two men who demanded that they hand over their valuables.
It was while the victims were trying to gather their belongings to give the suspects that the woman was reportedly instructed to take off her clothes. The gunmen began physically assaulting both victims when she resisted.
The Guyana Standard was told that the woman was then raped by both men at a corner of a building in the community center compound. Ranks claimed that the community ground is lonely at nights.
