Two women were killed in an accident around 16:45 hrs yesterday when a driver lost control of his vehicle and collided into them at Marudi on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
The deceased have been identified as Melva Lucas, 54, and Elsa Fernandes, 51, both of Grant Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara. Both women died on the spot.
According to information received, the women were standing on the parapet on the Marudi Public Road, waiting on transportation, when they were struck down.
The police said that the driver claimed that he was proceeding north along the road in, PRR 3606, when he swerved to avoid a collision with another car. This caused him to lose control of the vehicle. He collided with a bus shed before hitting the women.
The driver passed a breathalyser test but remained in police custody.
