With tears in his eyes, a security guard was this afternoon committed to stand trial at the High Court in Georgetown for the murder of his girlfriend, whose stab-riddled body was found in their apartment last August.

Jermaine Bristol, 34, of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, is accused of the capital offence and is currently on remand. It is alleged that Bristol, of Lot 272 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, murdered Shanece Lawrence, 24, on August 22, 2018. The two shared the apartment in which the woman’s lifeless body was found.

At the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry (PI) yesterday, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan told Bristol that there was sufficient evidence against him to stand trial before a judge and jury. Bristol will go on trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

The state’s case was presented by Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield.

According to court facts, Bristol and Lawrence were involved in an argument at their apartment and he took a knife and stabbed her several times to the neck.

After committing the offence, Bristol walked to the East La Penitence Police Station where he told the officers what he had done.

Bristol was also charged in 2014 for conspiring with persons to traffic cocaine in rum bottles at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.

He was found guilty in February 2016 and jailed for 50 months. However, he was released on $300,000 bail pending appeal on April 5, 2016.
