President, David Granger made it pellucid to Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday that not a single article of the Constitution says that the Government enters into a caretaker mode following the passage of a No-Confidence Motion.
Jagdeo related this to members of the media at his subsequent press conference.
The politician said he reminded the President that Articles 106 and 107 of the Constitution speak about the resignation of the Government after the passage of the No-Confidence Motion. As such, Jagdeo said he insisted that the Government is now reduced to a caretaker position.
The Opposition Leader said, too, that he reminded the President that the APNU+AFC Party had used the same argument when it brought a similar motion in 2014 against the PPP.
But he said that the President still held his ground.
Finance Minister, Winston Jordan, who spoke with the Guyana Standard, noted, too, that based on the legal advice Cabinet received, the Government is not in caretaker mode. As such, it will continue to pursue all developmental contracts and spending that is in line with the 2019 budget.
