A 65-year-old woman who was a cervical cancer survivor, died this morning in a house fire at Lot 22 Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The deceased has been identified as Rovena Hassan, called Vena, of Non Pareil. The fire started sometime after 01:30 hrs this morning.
According to information received, the woman had been residing in the two-storey property for a number of years. At the time of the fire, she was home alone and is believed to have been sleeping. No one reported hearing any sounds coming from the house.
Reports are that neighbours called the fire tender after they noticed the blaze. No one knew the elderly woman was in the house until firemen were trying to determine the cause of the blaze and stumbled on the remains.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the fire is suspected to be electrical in nature. A Post Mortem is expected to be performed on the remains on Monday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
