Commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Vincent Alexander disclosed today that he is not the least bit worried about the sanctions Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo said he will ask the international community to impose on him and other members of GECOM. In fact, the GECOM Commissioner finds the statements of the former President to be nothing but pure rubbish.
The PPP General Secretary had explained that these sanctions are being called for after the three Commissioners representing the interest of Government – Desmond Trotman, Charles Corbin, and Vincent Alexander – and GECOM Chairman, retired Justice James Patterson, voted last month to inform President David Granger that General and Regional Elections could not be held in 90 days.
Taking the aforementioned into account, Alexander told the Guyana Standard, “Calls for sanctions against the Chairman and other GECOM Commissioners is just balderdash. It is crass politicking. I don’t see a basis on which anyone can seek to sanction us. I don’t know of any convention on which that could be done or examples of it being done. It is just crass politicking.”
The GECOM Commissioner added, “I am not worried about that; I have no interest beyond the shores of Guyana. I have no bank account beyond the shores of Guyana or event assets. So I don’t know what they are going to sanction.”
