A security guard is now dead after a police rank was forced to open fire to stop him from hurling bottles and charging at him (rank) and his colleagues with a cutlass around midnight on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Mark Johnson of Lot 13 Nurney Village, East Berbice, Corentyne. He was shot to the right ankle and thigh. He died while receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital on Sunday morning.
According to information received, the deceased was under the influence of alcohol and began pelting his sister’s home with bottles and threatened to chop her and her family. He was also destroying items in his sibling’s yard.
To calm Johnson, his relatives were forced to flag down a passing police vehicle. The ranks attempted to talk to the deceased but he instead, started pelting them with bottles and ran towards them in an attempt to chop the officers with a cutlass.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that one of the ranks fired warning shots in the air but the deceased ignored this and continued running towards them. A rank was then forced to fire three shots to his feet.
The suspect was picked up and rushed to the hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
