A newborn baby was found alive on Friday morning while it was being taken to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) mortuary.
A hospital official has confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that a young woman, Bhanwattie Budhram gave birth to twins via cesarean section at the hospital’s maternity unit on Friday morning.
When the woman woke up from the anaesthetic—used for the delivery–she was informed that both babies were stillbirth.
According to information received, while the infants were being taken to the mortuary, relatives of the mother asked to see the twin. It was there that they discovered one of the babies was alive.
The infant had to be unwrapped and quickly taken to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care unit where it later succumbed.
The relatives of the young mother are calling for a thorough investigation.
Currently, medical practitioners at the hospital are involved in an ongoing probed after they incorrectly administered cancer medication to three children which resulted in their deaths.
