A Kamaka Landing mother of five, who is accused of attempting to kill her reputed husband by dealing him several chops with a cutlass, was this afternoon charged and released on self-bail after being arraigned before a City Magistrate for the offence.
The woman, Mava Kanswell, a farmer from Kamaka Landing, North West District, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The mother of five was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on March 17, 2019, at Kamaka Landing, with the intent to commit murder, she unlawfully and maliciously wounded Winston Lewis, her reputed husband.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that the two shared a relationship and, on the day in question, had an argument which caused the woman to leave their home.
However, a few hours later, the woman returned, visibly intoxicated, and continued arguing with her reputed husband.
The court heard that Lewis ignored the woman who in turn became annoyed and armed herself with a cutlass; she reportedly dealt the man several chops about his body.
The injured man was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and sent away.
While the court prosecutor did not oppose to bail being granted to the woman, he asked that conditions be attached.
The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, instructed Kanswell to report every Friday to the Kamaka Police Station until the hearing and determination of the matter.
She was also ordered to undergo counseling sessions twice weekly. The matter was adjourned to June 17, 2019, at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court for June 17, 2019.
