In order to advance its efforts to address emerging climate change challenges, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, yesterday met with representatives of the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO).
Minister Harmon met with PAHO/WHO’s Resident Representative, Dr. William Adu Krow; consultants Dr. Zoikla Fletcher-Payton and Dr. Daniel Buss; and Senior Advisor, Environmental Health and Sustainability, Eng Adrianus Vlugman. The meeting was also attended by Head of the Office of Climate Change, Ms. Janelle Christian. They met in Harmon’s Ministry of the Presidency office.
This meeting, this publication was informed, was yet another move taken by government to solicit support for its National Adaptation Plan (NAP), in keeping with the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance. It was signed in 2016.
As part of the NAP, there is a recognition that more in-depth work is required to address the emerging challenges in the health sector with regard to climate change.
In this regard, the Government of Guyana and PAHO/WHO have commenced the process of determining what actions are needed to be taken in addressing climate change challenges in the health sector. These actions would be influenced by applied research, which will then inform the institutional strengthening of the health sector.
Minister Harmon said that the government is open to accepting assistance from any agency which can help Guyana to achieve its commitments to the Paris Agreement, particularly in the health sector.
