Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo today said that crime is on the rise, public healthcare is deteriorating, there is an obvious economic slowdown, and gold miners are complaining bitterly. Yet, he said, ministers of government are nonetheless, “busy attending every wake, every funeral, and meetings with DJs.”

During a press conference at his office today, Jagdeo said that he is meeting daily with people on the ground —“the grass root people” — who are complaining about the general state of affairs in the country. He said that most people are losing hope as government continues to let several key matter go unaddressed.

Jagdeo said that the feel on the ground is that government has no interest in the welfare of the poor and the lower middle class.

He told the media, “Simona Broomes and other government officials are now at every wake and every funeral, meetings with DJ’s et cetera all around the country. Yet they would not spend a moment addressing the concerns of the miners for better roads or the conditions under which they have to work. A lot of miners, small miners come here. They are very, very upset now about the land allocation system there and the role the minister plays in that.”

Jagdeo further said that both petty and major crimes are on the increase. He said that the police force is “demoralised”. But, “instead of focusing on addressing crime, [Minister of Public Security, Khemraj] Ramjattan busy trying to see if he can get the prime ministerial position.”
