Two months ago, a married couple was charged and released on $10,000 each for allegedly using their establishment as a brothel. However, this charge was withdrawn and the couple instead faces new charges: two counts of trafficking in persons.
The couple, Kamwattie Rambarran called ‘Kama’ and Dhanraj Rambarran called ‘Jaman’ today appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam in the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
The charge alleged that, between January 1, 2019 and February 16, 2019 at Henrietta Village, Essequibo Coast, the defendants recruited, harboured, and transported two Venezuelan women for the purpose of sexual exploitation at their club, La Cabana Hotel and Bar.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them. Their lawyer, Bernard DaSilva, in a successful bail application, asked the court to grant bail to his clients on the grounds that they were adhering to the previous conditions that were granted.
Hence, the magistrate released the couple on $200,000 bail each, pending the hearing and determination of the trial. They are expected to make their next court appearance on May 15, 2019.
According to information, on the day in question, police ranks conducted a search at the couple’s premises and five women, all foreign nationals, were found. The women were suspected of being victims of human trafficking.
It was reported that the defendants caused the victims to engage in prostitution.
