A man who lost his right leg following an accident in 2015 was today charged for having in his possession an illegal gun and ammunition.
The man, 30-year-old Otto Pitman, this morning made an appearance before City Magistrate, Leron Daly.
The first charge against Pitman stated that, on April 30, 2019, at McDoom, East Bank Demerara, he had in his possession one 9 mm pistol when he was not a licensed firearm holder at the time.
It was further alleged that, on the same day and at the same location, Pitman had in his possession two live rounds of 9mm ammunition when he was not the owner of a licensed firearm at the time.
He denied both allegations after there were read to him by Magistrate Daly.
The court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, police on mobile patrol saw the defendant acting in a suspicious manner and they requested to conduct a search on him.
During the search, an officer found the gun and ammunition in the crotch of his pants. He was arrested and taken into custody for the offence.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to Pitman on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
Hence, he was remanded to prison until May 31, 2019.
