“What you did was wrong; you served nine months and it did not do anything so I’m now sentencing you to 18 months,” were the words of Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus before she sentenced an 18-year-old Kamaka youth to prison.
Mark Sampson, 18, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that, during the month of April 2019 at Kamaka, North West District, he broke and entered the home of Ryan Raymond and stole a watch valued at $35,000 and a gold ring valued at $25,000. The items were the property of Raymond.
Sampson in addressing the court stated, “Is me and another boy went by the house and he told me guard to make sure nobody ain’t come. When we done we mek a spin and he give me $10,000.”
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell stated, that during the month of April, the victim secured his home and went to bed leaving the articles mentioned in the charge on a table in his living room.
He later observed the articles missing and he went and reported the matter to the police. An investigation was carried out and Sampson was arrested for the offence.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, asked the prosecutor what sentence the court should impose on Sampson.
In response, the prosecutor said that 18 months would be sufficient since Sampson was a repeat offender and had been previously sentenced to nine months in prison on a similar charge.
After imposing the sentence, the magistrate told Sampson she hopes he will turn over a new leaf when he is released from prison.
