A man who told the court he had an unlicensed gun along with matching rounds in his possession to protect his family was today sentenced to two years behind bars.

Alvin June called  “Gangster Rass” appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The first charge stated that on May 29, 2019 at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he had in his possession three rounds of .4 ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, June had in his possession one Glock revolver when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

He pleaded guilty with explanation to both charges after they were read to him by the magistrate.  In his explanation to the court, he stated, “Your Worship, I was shot once and I have children so I had the gun to protect my family.”

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on the day in question, ranks acting on information went to the defendant’s home to conduct a search.

The court heard that, upon seeing the ranks, June dropped a bag he was carrying and ran. However, he was apprehended by an officer and the bag was recovered and checked in his presence.

Inside the bag, ranks found the unlicensed gun and ammunition. June was then told of the offence and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where he was later charged.

Magistrate Daly, after listening to both sides, told the court she considered the fact that the defendant did not waste the court’s time in her decision. Hence, she sentenced him to one year in prison on each of the charges.
