A fight over food items at the National Psychiatric Hospital in New Amsterdam, Berbice has left one dead and two patients in police custody.
The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Stefon Francis of Kitty, Georgetown. He died this morning, hours after he was attacked.
Francis was taken to the facility last week after he had a mental breakdown.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that Francis and two other patients at the facility had a fight on Sunday, during which, the victim was pushed to the ground, causing him to sustain injuries to the head.
He later died while receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Reports are that the fight started after the suspects stole food items from the deceased.
Director of Regional Health Services, Jevaughn Stephens confirmed that two persons have been arrested. He said too that the deceased was admitted for substance abuse.
The investigation is ongoing.
