A 17-year-old technician and a driver were this afternoon electrocuted while two other persons were injured at the National Stadium located at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
One of the deceased has been identified as Krishna Chand, a technician with Smart Tech Solution and of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. The second victim has only been identified as Anthon of Buxton, ECD.
The two injured workers have not been identified as yet. They are receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the workers were at the Stadium installing poles to facilitate surveillance cameras which are part of the government’s Smart City project when tragedy struck.
Reports are that the deceased and the two injured men were standing at the back of an opened-back canter truck installing metal poles with a crane that is attached at the back of the truck.
“The crane was leading the pole into the hole when the top of the pole touched a GPL (Guyana Power and Light Company) at the top. Anthon and Krishna were holding onto the pole, leading it into the hole when they were killed,” a police source said.
According to information received, the workers were focused on getting the pole into the hole and did not pay attention to the wires at the top. Both Chand and Anthon died instantly.
The other two employees received minor burns to their body. The deceased were employed by private companies that were contracted by the Ministry of Public Security to carry out the second phase of the CCTV project.
