A 25-year-old fisherman is missing and feared dead after he was thrown overboard while fishing in Suriname on Thursday.
The missing man has been identified as Sean Orlando Sewchand called “Bakes” of Nigg Settlement in Berbice. He only recently moved to neighbouring Suriname.
According to information received, Sewchand and five other fishermen were plying their trade in Marowinje River, Suriname when an argument erupted between him and one of the workers.
The men were all said to be imbibing. During the argument, a fight started between the 25-year-old and the other worker when Sewchand was reportedly pushed overboard.
Guyana Standard was told that the other fishermen jumped into the water to search for Sewchand but they were unable to find him.
The matter was immediately reported to the authorities in Suriname and the Coast Guard was dispatched to search for the body.
Up until Saturday, his body was not recovered.
