Three more witnesses today testified in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the attempted murder of a policewoman who was allegedly chopped several times about her body by the mother of her boyfriend’s child.
Revelana Smith, 25, of William Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that, on March 26, 2019 at Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown, she wounded Renetta Bharrat with the intent to murder her.
Smith, who is currently on remand for the offence, is on trial before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Today when the matter was called in the courtroom of Magistrate Daly, the victim, along with two other witnesses, testified as part of the prosecution’s case.
The witnesses gave brief testimonies and were not cross-examined by the lawyer representing Smith.
The prosecution is being led by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh. The matter was then adjourned to July 17, 2019.
According to information, on the day in question, the policewoman received a phone call from her boyfriend, who has a child with Smith.
She then proceeded to Kitty to meet him but, on arrival, Smith exited a car with a cutlass in her hand and began chopping Bharrat about her body.
She then made good her escape while Bharrat was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she was admitted as a patient for her injuries.
On Smith’s first court appearance, the prosecutor objected to bail being granted on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegation and the penalty the crime attracts. The prosecutor had also highlighted the fact that after the incident occurred, Smith went into hiding.
