Earlier today, Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo told the media that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) handed over 4993 bottles of high-end liquor to the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR). But GRA’s Commissioner General, Godfrey Statia has since told Guyana Standard that the allegation is completely erroneous.
Providing a breakdown of the alledged giveaway at a press conference, Jagdeo said that the PNC was handed 2564 bottles of Absolute, 1572 bottles of Johnny Walker Black Label, 104 bottles of Smirnoff and 168 bottles of Circo in six different flavours. Jagdeo estimates the 4993 bottles would cost no less than $25M. He called for the matter to be investigated.
When contacted for a comment, Statia told Guyana Standard that there is no truth to Jagdeo’s utterances. The tax boss stressed that seized alocohol is sold using the authority’s pricing list.
Statia added, “We make use of our pricing list at all times and our records are there for all to see. We do not check to see if the buyers are PNC or PPP. Jagdeo is just creating mischief…”
