A welder who allegedly threw away a bag containing marijuana after he saw police ranks approaching him was today slapped with a narcotics trafficking charge and remanded to prison.
Twenty-six-year-old Dextroy Lewis of 592 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown denied that on June 24, 2019, at Princes Street, Georgetown he had in his possession 27 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
He appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Lewis was represented by attorney-at-law Keoma Griffith. The lawyer, in an unsuccessful bail application, told the court that his client received injuries about his body which he sustained while in custody. As a result, Lewis needed medical attention, Griffith said.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman stated that on the day in question at around 01:00 hrs, police on patrol duty saw the defendant acting in a suspicious manner. The court heard while the police van approached the defendant he took out a plastic bag from his pocket and threw it in some bushes. The bag was then recovered by a police officer and leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be marijuana were found inside. Lewis was then told of the offence, to which he denied, and he was arrested and taken into custody.
However, the man’s lawyer told the court that at no time was any substance shown or weighed in his client’s presence.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Lewis to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 3.
