“Lies, lies, and more lies!” Joel Stuart exclaimed as he appeared in court for allegedly stealing three live ducks. He continued, “How can someone tell so many lies? I don’t know why my brother always trying to lock me up. Matter of fact, I don’t eat duck neither do I eat rank.”
A visibly upset Stuart, 48, of East La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was also accused of using threatening behaviour towards his brother Godfrey Stuart.
The first charge against him alleged that he stole three live ducks valued at $15,000 from his brother. It was further alleged that on June 25, 2019, at East La Penitence, he made use of threatening behaviour towards his brother.
He denied both charges after they were put to him.
Facts Presented by Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman stated that on June 24, 2019, at around 18:00 hrs, the victim and his sister were at home when they heard a noise at the back of the house. The court heard that when the victim went to see what was making the noise he saw the defendant leaving the yard with three live ducks in his hand and a cutlass.
The following day, the victim went and reported the matter to the police. However, while returning home, he was confronted by the defendant who had a cutlass in his hand and threatened to chop him. A second report was made to the station and the defendant was arrested.
Joel Stuart, in addressing the court, said, “My brother is very wicked and loves to lie. Every year he coming up with a story so that I can be sent to jail. All he does do is lie.”
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds that he threatened to chop his brother and the prevalence of the offence. Hence, he was remanded to prison until July 12.
