President David Granger and Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo are set to meet tomorrow (July 4). This is slated to be the first meeting of the two leaders following the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) rulings on the validity of the December 21, 2018 no-confidence motion and the appointment of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman.
Guyana Standard understands that the meeting is slated for 3:00 PM and the single item to be discussed is the appointment of a new GECOM Chairman.
The CCJ ruled that the manner in which President Granger appointed former GECOM Chairman, Justice (Retired) James Patterson was flawed. It also declared that GECOM is without a chairman.
After that declaration, Patterson “resigned”.
The post remains open at a time when the country should be preparing for general and regional elections.
