A 17-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed his friend during a row over $500 was today charged with murder.
The teenager appeared before Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Children’s Court, within the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where the charge was read to him.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on July 5, 2019, at Kaneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Mervin Squires.
The teenager was remanded to prison until July 24.
According to information, on the day in question, Squires, a 21-year-old labourer of Lot 52 First Field Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, and the teenager were engaged in a gambling game with cards.
It was reported that during the course of the game the two got into a heated argument over $500. As a result of the argument, Squires pulled off a chain the teenager was wearing at the time.
The teen then became annoyed and armed himself with a knife and inflicted two wounds to the left side of Squires’ chest. The injured Squires was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The matter was then reported, an investigation was carried out, and the teenager was charged with the offence.
