Investigators in Region Nine are currently wrapping up their probe into an allegation made by a 16-year-old boy that a Member of Parliament (MP) made sexual advances towards him and then spiked his drink when he refused.
Once the investigation is completed, the file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the MP was released from police custody this morning. The teenager who made the police report is said to be known to the MP. It was reported that the incident happened last week.
According to information received, the victim attended an event where the MP was also present. The suspect reportedly took the victim and others to an establishment in the village. There, the MP reportedly offered to perform oral sex on the teenager. The young man told the police that when he refused, the MP spiked his drink which caused him to lose consciousness.
However, a medical examination performed on the teen showed that he was not sexually assaulted. The politician has since denied the allegation.
Meanwhile, Minister of Social Cohesion Dr George Norton, during a press conference today, when asked to share his comments on the issue, said that the accused politician has a lot to answer to but he expressed his confidence that the police will handle the matter professionally. He said too that the government has invested a lot of money into ensuring sexual crimes are properly investigated.
