A day after a teenager told the court he was so hungry that he robbed two persons, he was today sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for the armed robberies.
The sentencing was handed down by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to Quacy Jupiter, 18, of 173 Campbell Street, Albouystown, Georgetown. He was slapped with five charges yesterday on his first court appearance.
The Magistrate sentenced Jupiter to two and a half years on each of the charges to which he pleaded guilty. The sentences will run concurrently; hence he Jupiter will only spend two and a half years behind bars.
Though the young man had admitted to robbing two persons, he denied another armed robbery charge and that he had an illegal gun and ammunition in his possession.
The first charge stated that on August 1 at Louisa Row, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Robert Rollins of a phone valued at $20,000, a ring valued at $8,000, and a bicycle valued at $15,000.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he robbed Ulric Bristol of a haversack valued at $30,000, a phone valued at $30,000, and a bicycle valued at $15,000.
The third charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, he robbed Roxanne Daniels of two phones valued at $110,000 and $15,000 in cash.
It was further alleged that on August 1 at Campbell Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, he had in his possession a .32 revolver when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
The last charge stated that on August 1 at Campbell Street, Albouystown, he had in his possession four rounds of .38 ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels for one of the charges stated that on August 1, Bristol left his workplace riding his bicycle around 04:30 hrs when he was approached by Jupiter and another man. The court heard Jupiter placed a gun to the victim’s head and told him to hand over his valuables.
The victim, being fearful for his life, handed over his belongings to the defendant. Jupiter and his accomplice then escaped on bicycles.
The matter was then reported to the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and Police acting on information went to Lot 1 Campbell Street, Albouystown where they made contact with the defendant.
A search was then carried out in a room in which he was occupying and the stolen articles were found in his room. Jupiter was then arrested and taken to the station where he was positively identified by the victims as the person who robbed them.
