Since the Lethem Branch of the National Library was gifted three robotics kits by STEMGuyana in February, a group of enthusiastic youngsters began to meet several times a week at the library to ‘make things’.
Jayden, Tristan, and Eton Macedo and a few friends from a nearby village said that at first they took four days to make their favourite toys — mini race cars complete with motherboards that allow then to be remote controlled. They used the instruction manual that comes with each robotics kit.
When officials of the Telecommunication Ministry caught up with them on Friday, August 16, they said that after several tries one car now takes each boy 10 to 15 minutes to put together in time for the race on the floor of the library. Before long, they return to the robotics table to construct another more complex machine as demonstrated in the manual.
Librarian Andrea Charles said that students visiting the library come from many villages surrounding Lethem. The Library is usually quiet during the August holidays but she expects things to liven up when schools reopen, as it always does.
She also received the Ministry’s gift of five digital tablets which the Wi-Fi equipment installed by the National Data Management Authority will connect to the new network in Lethem town.
