A Hururu Mission, Berbice River resident who was charged just days ago with the attempted murder of his ex-lover and her male friend, has confessed to the 1998 killing of his reputed wife, Viola Thomas.

Philbert Thomas called “Gilbert” was remanded to prison last week after he chopped his ex-partner, Dally Gobin and her male friend, Leymond Smith during an altercation at Gobin’s home in Hururu Mission.

He was arrested while hiding out at a camp in Hururu Backlands and later charged. Divisional Commander, Kevin Adonis this morning said that the suspect is now being questioned for the 1998 murder of his reputed wife.

According to information received, after fatally stabbing Viola Thomas to death during an event at the Kwabanna village ground in Region One, the suspect changed his name from “Gilbert” to “Philbert” and had been evading the police by relocating on numerous occasions.

It was only after his photograph appeared in the newspaper that persons who were familiar with the murder which happened 21 years ago informed the police. The suspect was questioned and has since confessed.

A file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution, Shalimar Ali-Hack, for advice.
