The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has issued a final warning to developers who are operating without the requisite environmental permits.
In a notice to the public, the agency said that it is illegal, according to the Environmental Protection Act Chapter 20:05 and the Environmental Protection (Authorisations) Regulations 2000, to operate, construct and/or conduct developmental activities without a valid environmental permit and/or environmental authorisation.
Sixteen developers were put on notice with three operating without permits; 10 operating with expired permits; and three failing to uplift their approvals.
The types of facilities include poultry farms, a battery assembly plant, a gas station, hotel, and fish processing facilities.
The agency said that the notice is the final warning and developers listed are required to either:
- Submit application for environmental authorisations, whether new or for renewal to the EPA; or
- Submit outstanding documents in relation to such applications to the EPA; or
- Uplift their Environmental Permit/or Environmental Authorisation from the EPA.
“Failure to adhere to the notice by September 16 of this year, will result in the agency taking steps to close your operations and/or legal action against identified developers for violations of the Environmental Protection Act and its regulations, where necessary.” The EPA stated.
