A new well has been promised for Katoka, a village in Region Nine, by Managing Director of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Dr. Richard Van West-Charles.
Recently Dr. Van West-Charles, along with a team, visited the community and met with residents who were told that the drilling of the new well will be catered for under the 2020 budget.
According to the GWI Managing Director, this project will be undertaken in the new year. A team of technical personnel are scheduled to return to the community shortly to map the area and ascertain their demand/supply needs.
Executive Director of Hinterland Services, Mr. Ramchand Jailal, said the mapping will also determine the lengths of pipelines to provide a better source of water supply, especially in the dry season.
GWI will also be looking at ensuring the community’s school sanitary block and health center are receiving adequate water and that they are functioning optimally.
Once the well is drilled, the new water supply system will be powered by a photovoltaic system (solar panels).
Meanwhile, GWI has announced that in Nappi Village, also in Region Nine, plans are afoot to construct a new trestle which will be connected to a new well to serve the community. The trestle will help to serve an additional 20 households who will gain access for the first time. For this purpose, 1300ft of pipelines are to be laid to connect these households. Also in MocoMoco, another Region Nine village, works are moving apace to supply a secure source of potable water for the community. Since the drilling of a new well at the end of July, 2019, a control panel is being built, the well site has been fenced and excavation works have commenced for the laying of 4-inch transmission lines, of which the community is assisting with installation. Thus far, approximately 400 meters of pipelines have been laid.
Upon completion of the distribution system, water will be pumped from the well, directly to the transmission lines. A trestle and storage tank will be constructed in the future to enhance the water supply system.
