A 27-year-old fisherman, whom the court heard chopped a man he was drinking with, was this afternoon remanded to prison for the offence.

Calvin Murray, of Waramuri Village, North West District, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Murray pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on September, 2, at Waramuri Village, in the North West District, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Shane Peters with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on the day in question, the defendant and the victim went to a birthnight party, at Waramuri Village, North West District, where they consumed alcoholic beverages and became intoxicated.

The court heard that around 22:45 hrs, the men had an argument and the defendant went away.

The Prosecutor told the court that the defendant returned to the party with a cutlass and dealt the victim a chop to his left leg causing him to receive a fractured bone and damage to the muscles.

The victim was then rushed to the Kumaka District Hospital where he was treated and transferred to the Suddie Hospital where he remains a patient.

The matter was reported and following an investigation, Murray was arrested, hence charged for the offence.

Prosecutor Singh objected to bail being granted to Murray on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegation and the fact that the victim is still hospitalized.

The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Murray to prison until September,9 when he will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
