A man, who told a couple he was in a position to sell them two vehicles, which were seized by the Guyana Revenue Authority, was this afternoon charged and sentenced.

Twenty-six-year-old Kevin Campbell appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts where he was slapped with three charges.

The first charge stated that on March 7, 2019, at the Guyana Revenue Authority, Camp Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained the sum of $150,000 from Jiram Rampersaud by pretending that he was employed at GRA and was in a position to sell him one Toyota Primo Car, knowing same to be false.

The second charge stated that on March 8, 2019, at the Guyana Revenue Authority, Camp Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained the sum of $300,000 from Malinie Rampersaud by falsely pretending that he was employed at GRA and was in a position to sell her one Toyota Primo Car, knowing same to be false.

The last charge stated that on July 3, at Robb and King Street, Georgetown, while being in lawful custody, he escaped from the said custody.

An unrepresented Campbell pleaded guilty to all the charges after they were read to him.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that during the month of January 2019, the couple made contact with Campbell and he told them he was employed at GRA and was in a position to sell two vehicles which were seized by GRA.

The court heard that in the month of March the victims handed over the monies to the defendants. However, after the defendant collected the cash, he went away and failed to deliver the vehicles to the couple.

The matters were then reported and following an investigation, he was arrested.

However, on July 3, while the police vehicle stopped in the vicinity of Robb and King Street, he jumped out of the vehicle and made good his escape. He was later apprehended, hence the present charges.

The Magistrate, after listening to the facts sentenced Campbell to two years each on the two charges of obtaining monies by false pretense and one-year imprisonment for escaping lawful custody.

The sentences will run concurrently so Campbell will only be spending two years behind bars.
