A suspected gunman was shot and killed by police ranks around 02:00 hrs this morning at Norton Street, Lodge after he and an accomplice robbed two persons at the Stabroek Market a few minutes earlier.
The deceased has been identified as Odinga Williams. Police sources indicate that the suspect was carrying a black haversack which contained a .38 revolver with the serial number filed out, a gold chain, three cellular phones, $10,000 cash, live rounds and a number of other items.
The deceased’s accomplice managed to escape. According to information received, at around 01:30 hrs this morning, two persons went to the police outpost at the Stabroek Market to report that they were robbed by two gunmen on bicycles.
Descriptions of the gunmen were given and ranks on a patrol went out in search of the robbers. The two suspected robbers were subsequently seen entering Leopold Street and in an attempt to arrest them, they managed to escape.
However, the police ranks continued to search the surrounding areas and noticed the men on Norton Street.
Upon noticing the police again, the men opened fire at the ranks, resulting in the lawmen returning fire—injuring one of the suspects. The second bandit managed to escape.
