Noting that the “interim” status places restrictions on his administration and makes its functioning “uncomfortable,” President David Granger said that he is anxious to proclaim a date for elections.
The Head of State told the media this morning that he is hoping the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) can pronounce on its readiness for elections very soon.
Granger’s comments were made even as the commission is expected to meet later today to formalize the timelines for elections.
The President said his mindset has always been for a clean list and credible elections in the shortest time possible.
Granger said that GECOM must be able to satisfy him of its readiness for elections. Once satisfied, the president said that he will then consider making an announcement on the date of the elections as soon as possible.
