Counting From 2015 to now, ExxonMobil’s subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL), recorded a $2.5B (US$12.5 Million) expenditure that covered a number projects considered part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
While it has the option of requesting cost recovery for such investments, the company has opted not to go down that road. At least this is according to its Public and Government Affairs Advisor, Janelle Persaud, ExxonMobil.
Persaud confirmed today with the Guyana Standard contributions and sponsorship given in the areas of STEM Education; women, youth and community empowerment; and environmental sustainability are all included
in the $2.5B
Persaud also spoke about financial support for scholarships in research at the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation, the University of Guyana for various projects such as student support and lab refurbishments, development of youth through sports, Volunteer Youth Corporation STEM after school programme, and employment readiness in various regions.
Specifically, $120M was given to Iwokrama for its science programme while $400M was given to Conservation International Guyana to advance Guyana’s efforts for a sustainable economy through education, research, sustainable management, and conservation.
Further to this, Persaud said that ExxonMobil Guyana has also worked with other organizations and communities such as the Waramuri and Mainstay/Whayaka in Regions One and Two to support community empowerment. She said too that their CSR efforts have extended to the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area for village seed banks and shade houses as well as the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) for emergency preparedness and response support.
