The Guyana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), has reported that the ongoing 2019 second crop is very much behind the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo)’s production schedule. In fact, the union said that company in a deficit of 12,023 tonnes; nearly 35% below its anticipated production.
The Union said that this revelation was made during a meeting it had with National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) and GuySuCo on October 01, last Tuesday.
GAWU said that the industry is in the 7th week of the 18-week scheduled second crop.
“From the engagement, our Union learnt that as at last weekend (September 28), the Corporation’s aggregate second crop production reached 21,869 tonnes sugar. In keeping with the production schedule, sugar production ought to have reached 33,892 tonnes. Thus, GuySuCo, at that time, was in a deficit of 12,023 tonnes or was nearly 35 per cent below its anticipated production,” the union noted.
GAWU said that when it sought a disaggregation of the data, the picture became even more “alarming”. The following table was shared to the media:
Estate | Targeted Production | Actual Production | Deficit | % |
Albion | 16,585 | 10,261 | 6,324 | 38.1% |
Blairmont | 9,882 | 6,624 | 3,258 | 32.9% |
Uitvlugt | 7,425 | 4,984 | 2,441 | 32.9% |
Industry | 33,892 | 21,869 | 12,023 | 34.6% |
