The Alliance For Change (AFC) has failed to serve its intended purpose within its marriage with the A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), says Executive Member of the Citizenship Initiative, Ruel Johnson.
The social activist says that the AFC was expected to be the check on the APNU, its conscience in some regard. But metaphorically speaking, Johnson said it has become a “weak, torn and tattered” sail on the ship that is destined to take Guyana to the promised land.
During his interview with the Guyana Standard, Johnson said, “Imagine you are on a ship and the destination is the Promised Land. But that ship is stalled along the way. Then there is a strong wind in the direction of the Promised Land. What the AFC was, is a sail to capture that breeze, that public sentiment. Now imagine you are on this ship with this new sail and you’re seeing this sail, the AFC, getting weak, torn and tattered. Now the ship is stuck again. Do you say you wouldn’t build another sail? Not at all! You build a new one.”
The Executive Member added, “The public sentiment and desire (for a change) is still there. In fact, it is stronger than before. But what we need is a sail that has stronger fibers throughout as opposed to the previous one. We need credible tapestry to take us forward.”
Johnson said that the Citizenship Initiative aspires to be this “credible tapestry” for the people while noting that in everything it pursues, every policy, every development idea, will be guided by “the will of the wind itself.”
