Kevin Stephens, a former security guard attached to the MMC Security Force was today handed a 12 years jail sentence for killing his colleague, Herbert Verwyane, who was said to be in the habit of making insulting remarks about his female relative.
Stephens, who was initially indicted for the September 17, 2016 murder of Verwayne which occurred at Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara, opted to plead guilty to manslaughter.
The custodial sentence was handed down by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the High Court in Demerara.
According to information, on the day in question, Stephens shot Verwayne, a father of five, of Lot 710 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, in the neck after accusing him and other workers of making “ill remarks” about his relative. The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Another worker was wounded during the shooting incident.
Prior to his incarceration, Stephens resided at La Penitence, Georgetown.
