The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) said that it has noted with “deep concern” the decision of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to have some 28,000 persons be removed from the voters’ list who have not uplifted their Identification Cards.

The corporate bloc said too that such a decision would be regarded as unconstitutional since they claim, that it flies in the face of the Chief Justice (CJ)’s ruling on this matter, “which is very explicit”.

“Secondly, an Identification Card is not a requirement to vote since registered voters can also vote by way of presenting a valid passport or other form of Identification,” the body noted in a release.

The opposition, through its Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, had raised similar concerns during a news conference, where he accused government-aligned commissioners of trying to confuse the populace.

He accused the commissioners also of deliberately trying to create holes in the voting process to ensure there is a basis for legal action should the coalition lose the impending elections.
