Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo says that he has not decided what role he will play in a People’s Progressive Party/Civic government should the party secure a victory at the upcoming polls.
His comments were made in response to a question regarding his protégé, and presidential-hopeful Irfaan Ali’s public announcement in which he indicated his intention of having Jagdeo serve as his vice-president.
His comments were made on Kaieteur Radio some days ago.
This revelation has since been the subject of contention. The Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon said, just this morning, that such an appointment will fly in the face of the constitution and the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ)’s ruling which limits Jagdeo to two terms. This position will expose Jagdeo to the possibility of performing the duties of the President.
Harmon condemned Ali’s assertion that there was nothing legally stopping Jagdeo from being bestowed with these responsibilities.
Jagdeo, on the other hand, said that he has not decided what role he will play should the PPP/C emerge victorious at the March 2, 2020 polls. He added that he did not even discuss this appointment with Ali. In fact, Jagdeo said that Ali’s desire is exactly what it is – a desire.
The Opposition Leader said that he has not put “serious thought” into what position he will take. However, what he plans to do is to make Ali “the best president” Guyana has ever had – even better than himself.
He said that he will lend support to Ali in the execution of his duties, and will work to ensure that the promises the PPP/C makes, are fulfilled.
Jagdeo said that he has other things that he wants to do with his life, and does not favour a position that would restrict him to office life.
Just a few months ago, Jagdeo declared that he will play a “formal role” in a PPP government, he said that his interest is “policymaking.”
