With the ongoing gang war in Agricola, police recently conducted a raid exercise in the community which saw three youths being remanded for illegal firearms and ammunition, while a woman was charged for obstructing the lawmen from carrying out their duties.
Those charged are Emma Harvey,42, of 80 Brutus Street, Agricola; Esan Gibson, 18, of Brutus Street, Agricola; Gregory Boyce, 31, a vendor of Remus Street, Agricola and Keanu Heyliger 20 of 67 Remus Street, Agricola.
The first charge stated that on November 21, 2019, at Brutus Street, Agricola, Gibson had in his possession one .38 pistol and three live matching rounds when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.
While, on the same day, at the same location, Boyce had in his possession one .32 pistol and 23 matching rounds when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.
It was further alleged that Heyliger had in his possession one .32 Taurus revolver when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.
The last charge stated that on November 21, 2019, at Brutus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, Harvey obstructed police constable Godwyn Thomas, who was acting in the execution of his duties.
The defendants all denied the charges that were read to them by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
They were all represented by Attorney-at-law Paul Fung-at-fat. The lawyer asked that his clients be released on reasonable bail citing that the firearms were not on their possession.
However, facts presented by the court prosecutor, Seon Blackman stated that on the day in question, police were carrying out raid exercise in Agricola when they made contact with the three men. The court heard the men, upon seeing the ranks, attempted to run but were apprehended.
A search was then carried out and they were all found to be in possession of illegal arms and ammunition. They were then arrested and taken into custody, hence charged for the offence.
In relation to Harvey, the court heard that while officer Thomas was arresting the defendants, the woman obstructed him from performing his duties.
The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to all the defendants on the grounds of the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charges attract.
The Magistrate remanded the men to prison until December 4 while Harvey was released on $30,000 bail.
