Twenty-seven-year-old Orwin Peters, called “Ratty”, was moments ago committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of a bus driver who was shot and killed in 2017.

Peters, a mechanic of 48 Norton Street, Bagotstown, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge which stated that on July 11, 2017, at Georgetown, he murdered Tedroy James, called ‘Six Head,’ in the course or furtherance of a robbery.

This afternoon, when the matter was called, Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore ruled that having considered the prosecution’s evidence, the court is of the opinion that a sufficient case had been made out against him. Hence, he was committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

According to information, on the day in question, James, a Route 32 minibus driver and a resident of Suddie Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, was shot dead around midday on July 11, at McDoom, East Bank Demerara, when he attempted to drive away from bandits, who robbed several passengers on his bus.

It was reported that James sustained a single shot to his head and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A police release stated that James was driving his minibus BTT 976 when he stopped to put off a passenger at McDoom.

As a passenger was about to disembark the vehicle, two male suspects, including one armed with a handgun, pounced on the unsuspecting passengers and began to rob them.

It was then that James observed what was happening and attempted to drive away but was shot.

The matter was then reported and the defendant was arrested and charged for the offence.
