The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) wants a Code of Ethics in place for those parties contesting the elections in March 2020. Specifically putting this recommendation forward recently on the Chamber’s behalf was its President, Nicholas Deygoo-Boyer.

The businessman said that the Chamber feels this is necessary given the contentious nature of Guyana’s elections and the history of appealing to “ethno-security” fears. He said, too, that the GCCI feels that elections in the future should be about principles and visions for developing the country.

Deygoo-Boyer said, “There is an old African proverb that my friends told me in college, ‘When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.’ We must push pass suffering as the grass in the fight amongst elephants. We see elections as a chance to have national conversations about who will have the best leadership and policies.”

Additionally, the GCCI President said that the Chamber is desirous of more diversity as well as technocrats at the operations level of Government as it believes that this would lead to more professional management of government institutions and agencies as well as less the retribution for supporters of the losing side.
